2008-2009 Athlete Assistance Program The British Columbia Weightlifting Association (BCWA) would like to thank and congratulate the talented athletes who have been nominated for BC AAP under the 2007-2008 British Columbia Athlete Assistance Program (BC AAP). The athletes nominated were selected using the sport specific selection criteria developed by the BCWA, approved by its Board of Directors and applied by the BCWA Athlete Selection Committee. BCWA congratulates the following athletes on their successful performances, and their nomination for BC AAP funding in 2007-2008: 1. Jasvir Singh – 90.182% Marker (Olympic Team Member) 2. Parm Phangura – 82.283% Marker (National Team Member) 3. Katelynn Williams – 80.195% Marker (National Team Member – Reserve)
British Columbia Weightlifting Association’s Sport Specific Athlete Selection Criteria British Columbia Athlete Assistance Program 2008/2009 The BC Athlete Assistance Program (BC AAP) is an athlete-centered program of financial assistance funded by and administered by the Sport and Recreation Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. BC AAP seeks to recognize and support BC high performance athletes striving to represent the Province and Canada in athletic competition. Athletes who have demonstrated the potential and commitment to attain this level of excellence can qualify for different levels of financial support based on relative levels of development and competition achieved within the overall limits of funds available. In general, the program seeks to relieve some of the pressures associated with training and competition needs when participating in national and international sport. The Sport and Recreation Branch intends that BC AAP focus on those athletes who are in the position to compete for Team BC and are just below those receiving Sport Canada funding. This financial assistance will ensure a continuum of support for the development of national and international class BC athletes. The objectives of the PSO component of the BC AAP are to:

This
criteria is subject to change on an annual basis. Any changes will be
communicated to the BCWA membership in advance of the qualifying period.
The BC
Athlete Assistance Program will be athlete-centered in that
awards will be allocated to individual athletes and funded through
the provincial sport organization or post secondary institution,
based on their demonstrated commitment to high performance sport and
excellence, and their potential to compete for British
Columbia and Canada. Athletes must meet sport-specific selection
criteria based on the following minimum standards:
SPORT SPECIFIC CRITERIA
To be considered for BC AAP, athletes must reach a minimum 75% of the National Senior Marker in the qualifying events and must compete in a minimum of 3 of the 4 qualifying events. Note: Meeting the minimum sport specific criteria, does not guarantee that the athlete will receive BC AAP funding.
Qualifying Events Canadian Senior Championships – May 17 & 18, 2008 Sea Festival: June 28 & 29, 2008 Ogopogo: August 23, 2008 BC Senior Championships: November 15, 2008 ** Any International events between May 15th and November 15th of 2008 (6 month period)

Sr. Team Coaching: To be eligible for funding assistance, athletes must be regularly coached by individuals who meet the established coaching qualification criteria.
· Athletes must be registered as members of a BCWA club for the 2008/09 season. Membership : Athletes receiving financial assistance are expected to be registered members of the British Columbia Weightlifting Association and to make themselves available to contribute to athlete development and coaching development programs delivered by the PSO. Training and Competition: Athletes are expected to adhere to the minimum training and competitive standards, including regularly working with a coach who meets the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) standards as indicated. · Athletes must be in financial good standing with their club, BCWA and CWFHC. Awards may be withheld at any time if the athlete is not in financial good standing with the Association. · Any athlete receiving financial assistance from the Province of BC must be available for provincial team selections, including the Western Canadian Championships, and if selected, commit to train and represent BC and BC Weightlifting in applicable competitions, including the Canadian Senior Championships. · Athletes shall attend all training camps as outlined in the calendar of events. Prior written notice is required if an athlete is unable to attend due to illness, injury, or work commitments. · Athletes must sign a BCWA Provincial Team Agreement. · Athletes are expected to follow the Code of Ethics. · Athletes must wear their BC Weightlifting Team suit at all National competitions. · If an athlete fails to meet the criteria as outlined in his/her Award Level he/she will forfeit their award and the funds will be divided equally among the remaining athletes in good standing. · Annual Training plans and weekly reports must be submitted to the athlete’s personal coach. All of these plans and reports MUST be available to BCWA if requested. · Athletes are expected to comply with the CWFHC Doping Control Policy. APPEAL PROCESS
December 26, 2008: Athlete appeal to BCWA Athlete Selection Committee December 26, 2008, the AAP awards will be released at that time.
